Walter Sinz pottery figural sculpture
Walter A. Sinz (1881–1966), figural sculpture. Possibly a water deity from mythology like Neptune or Poseidon, a figure is leaning over a bearded man clutching a piece of fabric as waves swirl around the back. An American sculptor, Sinz was educated at the Cleveland School of Art (Institute), where he also taught from 1911 to 1952. He designed figures for Cowan Pottery and in addition did bronze and metal work. This unusual sculpture measures 10 inches tall 9 inches wide and about 7 inches in deep. Made of red terra cotta clay, it weighs a little over 7 lbs, and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, firing flaws, or repairs, just a few very minor tiny flakes. Signed on the lower side W.Sinz. An excellent piece of Cleveland School Sculptural Art Pottery.
