Van Briggle Pottery Marks
Artus Van Briggle (1869 - 1904 ) was born in Felicity, Ohio. Around 1886, he worked with Carl Langenbeck of Avon pottery, and in 1887 joined Mrs. Storer at the Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati . In 1883, he went to Europe and studied at Julian Art Academy. In 1900 he left Rookwood and moved to Colorado Springs for health reasons. He exhibited some eatly work at the Paris Exposition of 1900. In 1901, he fired the first pieces at the Van Briggle Pottery. Later that year, he sold his Despond to the Louvre for $3,000*. Artus died in 1904 but the firm continued under the direction of Anne. The conjoined double A mark, standing for Artus and Anne has been incised or stamped on the work since the beginning until final closure in the 21stcentury. *American Art Pottery by Ralph and Terry Kovel in 1974
