Newcomb College Pottery floral gourd vase
Newcomb College Pottery floral gourd vase
Newcomb College Pottery vase carved with flowers, leaves, and stems wrapping around a gourd shape. Atypical in that their floral designs typically repeat, but this decoration is asymmetrically integrated with the form. Probably spiderwort flowers done in their signature matte blue and green glazes with pinkish yellow centered flowers. It measures 6 3/8 inches tall and 3 5/8 inches in diameter at the widest. It is in great condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs, just a little bubbling to the yellow glaze on the flower centers. Marked with the firm's die-stamped NC mark, a conjoined SI for artist Sadie Irvine, date code KQ40 for 1919, and a faint conjoined JM for potter Joseph Meyer. A fine example of the quintessential Arts & Crafts southern art pottery.
