Clewell copper clad pottery vase
Clewell copper clad pottery vase
Clewell copper-clad pottery bulbous vase, probably a Weller shape, with a great verdigris matte green and brick red brown patina. This vase measures 4 3/4 inches tall and 3 7/8 inches in diameter at the widest. It is in great condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or firing flaws, just a little tilt. Marked on the bottom with a hand incised Clewell and the number 466. Charles Walter Clewell developed a "secret" method for sheathing pottery vases with copper at his Canton Ohio studio beginning in 1906. By the 1920's he developed a technique to stabilize patinas, copper red and matte blue green verdigris. Often the blanks are identifiable from various Ohio potteries, Weller, Owens, Ferrock, etc. A good piece with great patina by a lesser known arts & crafts period craftsman.
