Ferock Studios copper-clad vase
Ferock Studios copper-clad vase
Ferock Studios rare pottery vase with Clewell copper-cladding, a deep matte brown and brick red patina, and a deeply cut-back landscape design. It measures 10 1/2 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches in diameter at the widest. It is intact and stable and presents really well, however there are multiple cracks to the copper skin and interior hairlines to the pottery. Marked on the bottom with a die-stamped Ferock and a two digit number. Born in Zanesville in 1878, Frank Ferrell had a long and noteworthy career beginning at Weller at age 16, then on to Owens before founding Ferock Studios in 1908 with Maude Pollock. It lasted 3 years, he then worked for Peters & Reed until 1918 when he left for Roseville where he designed virtually all the lines including Futura and Pinecone. Charles Walter Clewell developed a "secret" method for sheathing pottery vases with copper at his Canton Ohio studio beginning in 1906. By the 1920's he developed a technique to stabilize patinas, copper red and matte green verdigris. Often the blanks are identifiable from various Ohio potteries, Weller, Owens, Ferock, etc. This is a great piece with good original patina by a lesser known arts & crafts period craftsman.
