William J Walley Pottery leaf decorated vase
William J Walley Pottery leaf decorated vase. Glazed in a semi matte green over brown flambe glaze which highlights the eight hand tooled leaves. Die-stamped WJW. It measures 7 3/4 inches tall and 5 5/8 inches in diameter at the widest. It is in great condition with only a tiny, barely noticeable glaze chip to the rim, and no other chips, cracks, repairs, or firing flaws. Walley vases with carved and tooled decoration are rare. He used a wide variety of glazes, more than the Grueby or Merrimac Potteries to whom his work is often compared. The pottery was located in West Sterling Massachusetts where he began in 1898, making everything by hand. He died in 1919. An unusual piece of New England Arts & Crafts era art pottery.
